Can a Saliva Test Detect COVID-19 Outbreaks Sooner?
Jack Lipton, PhD, chair of Michigan State University College of Human Medicine’s Department of Translational Neuroscience, discusses the COVID-19 Early Detection Program, an innovative approach to mitigate the spread of the novel coronavirus on MSU’s campus. When the pandemic began, Lipton and his team shifted from their work in neuroscience research to developing a non-invasive saliva test to detect the presence of the virus in asymptomatic people. Dr. Lipton will discuss how this low-cost solution can monitor outbreaks on campus, and he’ll share his experiences navigating the obstacles of an academic lab trying to assist with COVID-19 testing.
