JMC hosts Dr. Cara Rogers, Assistant Professor of History at Ashland University, for the 2020 Constitution Day Virtual Lecture. Dr. Rogers' lecture is titled "Jefferson's Radical Son: William Short and the Problem of Equality"
Thomas Jefferson's views on race and slavery are a constant topic of debate. A recently discovered source of insight into this topic consists of letters between Jefferson and his "adoptive son," William Short. This lecture will introduce you to Short and some of his most radical ideas about how to transition Virginia from slavery to freedom--ideas which he and Jefferson discussed in a remarkable correspondence that spanned more than four decades, ending only with Jefferson's death in 1826.
